Flat Rock, Ind – Services for Melvin L. Davies, 77, an authority on Indiana pottery will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Carmony-Ewing Harrison Street Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. Davies died Monday at home. He was an industrial arts teacher 36 years. He taught at Mitchelle HS from 1937-1941 and Shelbyville HS 1942-73.  A researcher of Indiana pottery, he helped establish the potters shop at Conner Prairie pioneer settlement at Fishers and provided pottery information and loan materials to the Indianapolis Museum of Art.  He was a member of the Indiana, Shelby County and Parke County Historical Societies and the Indiana Potters and Indiana Artist and Craftsmen guilds. He was a member and former president of the Shelbyville Rotary Club and Farmers Masonic Lodge, Norristown. He also was a member of Friends Church, Bloomington (sic – Bloomingdale).  He was a 1934 graduate of Indiana State University and attended IU grad school.  He studied pottery and industrial arts vocational education at the former Ball State Teachers College, now Ball State University, the University of Tennessee, Indiana State University and John Herron Art Institute. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grover Museum, Shelbyville; Shelbyville Library or the donor’s favorite charity.  Survivors – wife Mildred C. Bannon Davies; daughters, Carolyn Mills, Mary Margaret Kellam; brother Kenneth Davies; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren. - kbz
